SUMMARY:EXHIBIT - You Have the Right! Mexican Americans and Due Process of the Law
DESCRIPTION:Explore MACRI’s new traveling exhibit\, You Have the Right: Mexican Americans and Due Process of the Law. \n  \nThis exhibit explores three court cases involving Mexican Americans and Mexican-perceived individuals that have been significant to the interpretation of the Fifth\, Sixth\, and Fourteenth Amendments and shaped interpretation of due process of the law in the United States: Miranda v. Arizona (1966)\, United States v. Brignoni-Ponce (1975)\, and Chavez v. Martinez (2003).  \nThe verdict in these cases\, whose plaintiffs were Mexican American and Latino individuals\, affect all Americans today. Miranda v. Arizona (1966) secured what we now call our “Miranda rights;” United States v. Brignoni-Ponce (1975) prohibited law enforcement from stopping and questioning someone on the basis of their appearance; and Chavez v. Martinez (2003) marked a rollback in protections from coercive questioning from authorities.  \nThe three moments featured in this exhibit remind us that the interpretation of constitutional amendments is constantly debated in courts at all levels of government\, and can result in expansions and contractions of civil rights. The legal struggle for civil rights is continuous\, and rarely a linear progression.  \n  \nThe exhibit will be on display from Monday\, April 27\, 2026 through Tuesday\, June 30\, 2026.  \nThe exhibit gallery is open Monday through Friday\, 10 AM—NOON and 1 – 4 PM\, or by appointment. \n  \nMACRI’s programs are funded in part by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture\, Bexar County\, the Mellon Foundation\, the John L. SUMMARY:EXHIBIT - William Merriweather Peña: The Father of Architectural Programming
DESCRIPTION:Explore MACRI’s new traveling exhibit\, William Merriweather Peña: The Father of Architectural Programming. \nWilliam “Willie” Merriweather Peña (1919-2018) was perhaps the most important Mexican American architect of the 20th century\, yet he remains largely unknown outside of the architecture field. Learn more about the life and work of this remarkable trailblazer with MACRI! \nThis Laredo\, TX native was a proud Aggie\, decorated World War II veteran\, author\, and partner in Caudill\, Rowlett\, Scott\, which grew to become the largest architecture firm in the world. Peña’s groundbreaking work on architectural programming\, which he honed during his first two decades at CRS\, became the basis for a book first published in 1969\, Problem Seeking: New Directions in Architectural Programming\, which he followed with Problem Seeking: An Architectural Programming Primer\, now in its fifth edition and considered the classic programming guide for architects and a standard architecture textbook. It also earned Peña the title of “the father of architectural programming.” Peña was one of the leading architects in the nation\, a visionary\, an industry pioneer who was named an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Fellow in 1972 and received multiple awards from AIA Houston. When Peña retired in 1984\, he had directed programming for over 400 projects in 38 states and ten countries while mentoring younger architects and writing and speaking about architectural practices across the globe. \nThe exhibit gallery is open Monday through Friday\, 10 AM—NOON and 1 – 4 PM\, or by appointment. \n🌟 This exhibit was created with support from the Conservation Society of San Antonio. 🌟 \nMACRI’s programs are funded in part by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture\, Bexar County\, the Mellon Foundation\, the John L. SUMMARY:EXHIBIT - Cisneros V. Corpus Christi ISD: The Long Fight to End School Segregation
DESCRIPTION:Explore MACRI’s new traveling exhibit\, CISNEROS V. CORPUS CHRISTI ISD: THE LONG FIGHT TO END SCHOOL SEGREGATION. \nIn 1968\, José Cisneros and twenty-five other Mexican American parents sued Corpus Christi Independent School District for illegally segregating Mexican American students into poorly maintained and under-resourced schools separate from Anglo schools. The court found that the school district was intentionally segregating students and ordered Corpus Christi ISD to integrate its schools. This landmark decision for Mexican American civil rights extended the same protections of Brown v. Board of Education (1954) to Mexican American students\, nearly a quarter of a century later. \nLearn about the history of Cisneros v. Corpus Christi ISD (1970)\, the people behind the case\, and how it fits into larger legal struggles to improve Mexican American access to public education.  \nExhibit Hours: \n\nOn display from Saturday\, September 27 to Wednesday\, November 26\, 2025\nOpen Monday-Friday 10 AM – NOON and 1-4 PM\, or by appointment\n\n***\nMACRI’s programs are funded in part by the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture\, Bexar County\, the Mellon Foundation\, the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation\, Spurs Give\, and individual donors like you! Gracias!
